UVGI Design Basics for Air and Surface Disinfection,  HPAC Engineering January 2000, v72n1, pp100-110.  Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation lamps can help clean coils and improve indoor air quality by W. J. KOWALSKI, PE and W. P. BAHNFLETH, PhD, PE Department of Architectural Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park , PA 16802

“Direct UVGI exposure can sterilize any surface given enough time.”

US Government - GSA Facilities,  Standards for the Public Buildings Service

March 2003…..The U.S. Government follows certain standards regarding all Public Buildings Service, including HVAC equipment. The following recommendation is taken from the latest GSA Facilities Standards document, #5 Mechanical, section 5.9, HVAC Systems and Components.

"Ultraviolet light (C band) emitters shall be incorporated downstream of all cooling coils and above all drain pans to control airborne and surface microbial growth and transfer."

US Government - Center for Disease Control October 1994

“Research has demonstrated that UVGI is effective in killing or inactivating tubercle bacilli under experimental conditions and in reducing transmissions of other infections in hospitals, military housings, and classrooms.”

See www.cdc.gov for more details.

Air Conditioning Research Testing Institute November 2002

“Germicidal Ultraviolet (UVGI) lamps have a long history of use for inactivating microbial aerosols.  A single lamp inactivated more that 50% of the bioaerosol” “. ...the use of UVGI is likely to be proposed with increasing frequency.  It is a low-pressure-drop, non-intrusive technology that has real potential.”
